Ride a Historic Steam Train to Ayutthaya on 26 March 2025
To celebrate the 128th anniversary of the Thai railway system, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) invites travelers to experience the charm of a historic steam locomotive journey from Bangkok to Ayutthaya. This special event commemorates the first train service in Thailand, inaugurated by King Rama V on March 26, 1896, connecting Bangkok and Ayutthaya.
For this occasion, SRT will operate the Pacific-class steam locomotives No. 824 and No. 850, built by Japan’s Nippon Sharyo after World War II. These vintage trains are normally preserved at Thonburi Depot and only make rare appearances for special events.
⏰ Train Schedule & Experience
The steam train will depart from Bangkok’s Hua Lamphong Station at 08:10 AM and arrive in Ayutthaya at 10:20 AM. Passengers will have over six hours to explore the ancient city, visiting historic temples, ruins, and vibrant markets before the return journey at 4:40 PM, arriving back in Bangkok at 6:50 PM. The train will also stop at Bang Sue Junction and Rangsit for passenger pickup and drop-off.
